I am in love with trees. Living where we do it is challenging to find a beautiful tree that I want to just admire, palm trees just don’t cut it for me. But, once in a while a tree really strikes me and lately, it is usually a sycamore tree.
I grew up looking up at Douglas Fir and Maple trees. I still can’t get enough of them and I actually long to sit with them.
When I need a tree fix we usually drive to Idyllwild or up in the Angeles National Forest. Both places this time of year are snow-covered and hard to get to so, it has been a while. Soon though we will be able to camp among the trees again and I will feel at home.
Both L and C show an interest in trees, they feel the bark, gather sticks and branches, love leaves, love to climb them, ask lots of questions and prop their heads back looking up when they find a curiously large one. I love watching them discover the enchantment in trees.
Both L and C are just starting to connect that the roots we see on the ground are part of a close by tree. These roots we found the other day were so beautiful and unique. L wanted to touch them, dig around to find more and he was just so curious about them. With good reason, they are really special.
Trees fill me up in so many ways.
I was so surprised at what I saw when L asked me to come and see what he built the other night right before he was going to bed.
A tree with a heart crayon in the middle made just for me…my heart is full.
Earth Day is a great day to remind ourselves and those we love how important our Earth is. For me, the more I see my boys connect to the Earth the happier I am. I love providing them with new opportunities to explore, touch and learn about rocks, mountains, weather, trees, flowers, our garden, forest animals, birds, they soak it all up.
Happy Earth Day…

I thought that first tree was a sycamore. I love them. This is a really special story. Put it to poetry.
Thank you Tammy. Trees just make my day
Sycamore trees really are beautiful trees, they take shapes unlike other regular straight up and down trees, their branches run horizontal and their bark is worth starting at for a long time. Happy to hear you enjoyed this post and I like your suggestion…I haven’t written much poetry, could be a fun new challenge.
We are kindred spirits! Went hiking at Chantry Flats last week – a completely new-to-me spot on the edge of the Angeles National Forest – and was giddy with excitement to be surrounded by so many trees.
Yes, I thought so when I read your Arbor Day post too. Oh Chantry Flats is a fantastic spot. If you are looking for a great view and fun adventure try the road up to Mt. Wilson, there is a small store with hot chocolate and treats and an outstanding view. I am always on the look out for new places around here to enjoy trees. Our favorite campsites are in the Angeles National Forest. Happy to hear you finally made it up there.
