Our neighbors recently purchased a new television and my boys managed (rather easily) to convince them to give us their box. This large box has turned into multiple hours of play over many weeks in our backyard…we all know the magical powers of large cardboard boxes, right?
This box has turned into a boat, a trash truck, a great hiding place, a punching bag but it’s best use so far is as a lawn raft.
Just after dinner the boys start in “Dad! Time for Cardboard!” My husband is such a good sport. He tries to hold them off as long as possible. It is really hot in the afternoon in our backyard and he knows once he says yes…he will be pulling the boys on the cardboard for as long as he physically can. They absolutely love it.
Soon, after the pleading continues and the shadows in our backyard start getting longer my husband gets set holding one side of the cardboard and our squealing boys jump on to the other end ready for a ride.
My boys combined weigh at least 85 pounds…my husband is pulling them and running at top speed.
The best is watching C loving giggling at L with a look on his face like “this is SO fun!”.
When one or both fall off…
The are laughing, they jump back up and run as fast as they can to catch back up to the raft.
Watching my boys utterly enjoying themselves night after night on a flattened box in our backyard is beyond fun. I can actually see memories forming between them that I know will be with them for their entire lives.
It takes a special Dad to muster up the energy to play, especially after a long day at work and with temperatures hovering around 85+ degrees. I am so grateful my husband can see past his own discomfort and give our boys such a gift (they are relentless in their asking…he doesn’t have much of a choice).
Listening to the squeals and enjoyment from my boys is absolutely the best.
I am really interested: What is your families favorite backyard activity together? What is your favorite thing your kid(s) turned a cardboard box into?
